How to write product and category page titles that earn the click
By AdminLast reviewed
A page title is a short promise about what the searcher will find. It should help a person distinguish your result from the alternatives, not try to repeat every possible keyword. For ecommerce pages, clarity usually wins: product or category first, the most useful qualifier second, then the brand if it adds recognition.
Product pages: be specific
Use the genuine product name, model or core specification. Add a useful differentiator only when it is true and helps the buyer decide: capacity, condition, compatibility, pack size or intended use. A title such as Refurbished Dell Latitude 7420 Laptop | 16GB RAM | Brand sets clear expectations. A title stuffed with “cheap best sale deal” does not.
Category pages need a different approach. They should describe the category and then the buying angle that the page actually supports, for example Business Laptops | Refurbished & New Options | Brand. Do not promise “next-day delivery” or “lowest price” unless the claim is consistently true and visible on the page.
Descriptions should complete the promise
The meta description is not a place to repeat the title. Use it to explain selection, condition, service or a meaningful next action. For a category: “Compare business-ready laptops by screen size, processor and condition. Clear specifications and UK delivery options.” For a product: “Intel Core i5, 16GB RAM and 512GB SSD. Checked, graded and supplied with the stated warranty.”
Search engines may choose different text, so treat a description as guidance rather than a guaranteed snippet. The on-page H1, opening copy and key information should all support the same promise.
Check the result before publishing
Use the SERP Preview to compare the title and description as a searcher would see them. It is a preview, not a ranking test; do not remove useful words simply to meet an exact pixel length. Then compare the result against competing pages: does it answer why a buyer should consider this page?
What to do next
Prioritise pages with high impressions but weak click-through rate in Search Console. Rewrite the title only when the page can fulfil the improved promise. Keep a change log and wait for enough impressions before declaring a result.
